Once you’ve got the hang of it, fitting one of our screen protectors takes about 20 to 30 seconds. We’ve made two short videos showing how to install our premium 9H nano glass screen protectors on a payment terminal. The quick one below walks through each step (it runs a little longer because we explain as we go). Further down, a longer video explains why they’re worth fitting.

Quick guide: installing a Keycovers screen protector on an EFTPOS terminal.

What you need

When to fit it

The best time to fit a screen protector is on a new terminal, straight after you remove the thin film it ships with. That film is only there to protect the screen in transit. It isn’t made for everyday use. Fitting the new protector straight away gives dust the least chance to settle on the screen.

That makes rollouts and staging the ideal time. If you’re setting up a batch of new terminals at the depot, fit the screen protectors as each unit comes out of the box, before it goes out to site.

Older terminals can still get one, and it will help stop further damage. Give the screen a good clean with a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe, then wipe it dry before you start.

Step by step

  1. Remove any existing protector. Peel off the shipping film or the old screen protector.
  2. Check which side is which. The new protector has a back layer labelled 1 and a front layer labelled 2. Hold it with the back (1) facing down, towards the screen.
  3. Line it up. Lay the protector on the screen, still with its backing on, and position it exactly where you want it to end up, lined up with all the edges.
  4. Tape it in place. Put one piece of tape at the top edge and one at the bottom, fixing the protector to the terminal. This locks it in position.
  5. Flip, peel and lay it down. Flip the protector over on its tape hinge, peel off the back layer (1), then flip it back into place on the screen.
  6. Let the adhesive spread. Touch the centre of the screen and the protector will start to spread out towards the edges. Give it a little help if needed, and work any small bubbles out towards the edges.
  7. Peel off the front layer (2) and do a final check. Work any remaining bubbles out to the side. Very small ones usually settle over the next 24 hours as the adhesive finishes spreading.

If a bubble won’t move, it’s usually a speck of dust trapped underneath. That’s why a clean, dust-free screen and workspace make such a difference.

Why protect the screen?

On a payment terminal, the screen is the part that staff and customers touch most. Here’s what our screen protectors are built to do.

9H scratch resistance

Our screen protectors are rated 9H, the top of the hardness scale used for screen protectors. They stand up to the things that scratch terminal screens every day: keys, rings, and cards tapped against the screen.

Flex rather than shatter

Tempered glass protectors are designed to break. On a terminal that’s handed to customers all day, that can leave sharp broken glass right where people tap. Our 9H nano glass protectors are very hard but flex rather than shatter, so a knock or drop doesn’t turn the screen into a hazard.

Matte or crystal clear

Our matte finish gives the terminal a premium, high-end look and helps reduce glare, including from direct sunlight. That’s a big help for terminals used outdoors, at markets, events and outdoor hospitality. It won’t remove glare completely, but it cuts it down noticeably. If you’d rather have a clear screen, we also make a crystal clear finish. Just tell us which you’d like when you order.

Exact-model fit

We cut our screen protectors in-house for each specific terminal, so they fit the screen exactly and sit neatly inside a silicone case. We can make them for any terminal or device with a screen. For more on what to look for, read our guide to choosing a screen protector for your payment terminal.
