Server holding a handheld smart payment terminal at a restaurant table while a customer pays with a phone

Sunmi smart payment terminals are becoming a familiar sight at New Zealand counters, tables and market stalls. NZ payment providers now offer Sunmi devices such as the P2 and P3, which combine card payments, receipt printing and Android business apps in one handheld unit.

That all-in-one design is what makes them useful, and it’s also why they’re worth protecting. A Sunmi terminal isn’t just a card reader. It’s often the POS, the receipt printer and the order pad as well. If it’s out of action, so is a lot of your business.

This guide covers the risks Sunmi terminals face day to day and how silicone cases and screen protectors help keep them working.

Sunmi terminals in New Zealand

Sunmi makes Android-based smart terminals. In New Zealand, models offered through payment providers and resellers include:

Keycovers makes silicone cases and screen protectors for the Sunmi P2 and P3. Availability and exact specifications of the terminals depend on the provider. Your terminal’s model number is on the label on the back or underside of the device.

Why Sunmi terminals need protection

The screen does everything

On a smart terminal, the touchscreen is the main interface for entering amounts, selecting items, running apps and taking PINs. Every interaction goes through the screen, so scratches and scuffs build up quickly. Cards, rings, keys and grit on fingers all leave marks. A damaged screen is harder to read and can affect touch response.

They’re built to move

Handheld Sunmi terminals are designed to be carried: table-side in restaurants, along queues in retail, around markets and events, and out on deliveries. That means more drops, more knocks and more time on wet tables, in pockets and in vans.

Printers and openings

Built-in printers mean extra openings, including the paper compartment, the tear bar and the card slots. Moisture, dust and food residue can get into these areas, particularly in hospitality and outdoor settings.

Constant cleaning

Smart terminals are high-touch devices and get cleaned often. As with any payment terminal, the general guidance from terminal manufacturers is to apply cleaner to a cloth rather than spraying the device, and to keep moisture out of openings. Check Sunmi’s or your provider’s guidance for your model. A screen protector and silicone case take the everyday wear instead of the terminal.

Protection options for Sunmi terminals

Screen protectors

A screen protector is the most important single piece of protection for a smart terminal. It takes the scratches and scuffs so the original screen stays clear, and it can be replaced quickly and cheaply when it gets worn. Look for:

Silicone cases

We also make black silicone cases for the Sunmi P2 and P3. A fitted case helps protect the edges and back from the everyday knocks of a terminal that’s carried around all shift, and adds grip for staff taking payments away from the counter. It’s designed to leave the screen and printer free to use. For businesses that take terminals to tables, outdoors or onto the road, a case combined with a screen protector gives the most complete protection.

Where protection matters most

Advice for resellers and fleet managers

If you supply or manage Sunmi terminals across many sites, protection is easiest and cheapest to fit at rollout:

  1. Fit before deployment. Apply screen protectors and cases during setup, while devices are clean and in one place.
  2. Standardise. Use the same protection across the fleet so replacements are simple to order and fit.
  3. Stock spares. Screen protectors and cases are wear items. Keeping spares on hand saves a site from running unprotected.
  4. Track damage. If certain sites or use cases return more damaged terminals, target extra protection there.
